Hyperfixating on Natalie Portman's 'Sally' outfit
Breaking down the PCO (Perfect Concert Outfit)
Hi all! Happy Fri!
Did everyone see Natalie Portman was this week’s Sally? If you’re like, ‘Who’s Sally?’ just watch this. I’m hyperfixating on her outfit, which I’m guessing Kate Young likely styled, and it’s so good: Big white graphic t-shirt tucked into high-rise denim cutoffs, with a jean jacket tied around the waist and white sneakers. Casual, simple, cool. Her hair also looks great. It’s bent, not curled. (Also, I feel like these two have good chemistry, no?)
If I were to recreate this Perfect Concert Outfit with what I have (which I plan to do), this is how I’d do it:
Levi’s 501 cutoffs: I got these at a Nordstrom Rack in Portland like seven years ago, and I never wear them anymore because they’re short and make me feel like an 18-year-old. However, with a big t-shirt and a jacket around the waist, the length is almost disguised, or less of a focal point. Also, I don’t think you can beat the Levi’s back pockets. Someone gave me the advice that if you find Levi’s 501s and they fit, buy them.
XL white graphic tee: I’d go with this one from my closet that I got at a Victoria Beckham Beauty event many years ago. (Will be channeling Harper!) Any white printed t-shirt would work, but it should be significantly oversized. I might check out the Men’s department at Housing Works on 64th.
Short denim jacket: I’d also go classic Levi’s here. I have this one. I like the thick texture of denim as opposed to a thinner shirt, although a chambray might work well. Whatever you’ve got, just sort of fold it up so when you tie it, it lies over the shorts without completely covering them. It’s an art.
White sneakers: Shopping my closet, I’d do these or these or these.
Okay, thank you for indulging me! We’ll see if I pull this look at Pier 17 on Monday.
SAVED TABS
To wear //
Carolina blue: When I played soccer, we wore Carolina blue to away games. I was obsessed with that whole kit. Now, I have exactly one piece of clothing in that same blue color: a silk dress that I wore to a wedding last summer (this is similar). I looove the look of this more casual sky-blue dress. Or this, which is more reasonably priced. Accessory-wise, I’ve worn this baseball hat on every walk this week. (Medicine cabinet mentions that fit the vibe: my Prequel moisturizer and prettiest hairbrush.)
A navy Polo sweater: I would style these two together, blue on blue.
For your (fake but natural-looking) tan //
Self-tan jelly: I had low expectations for this purple self-tanner, and it blew me away. It sinks into the skin immediately, smells nice, and brought my legs up a very natural half a skin tone shade with zero streaks. Big mood boost. It’s Jergen’s Natural Glow, but better.
For a release //
Breathwork: I’ve been trying breathwork this week, and after a 17-minute session, I texted my dad and was like, “Why are my ears ringing?” (Apparently, that’s normal.) The release is pretty crazy, so is what it brings up. I had to journal afterwards because I almost didn’t believe what I was seeing (in my head). I use the Alo Moves app, which I use daily for yoga, pilates, lymphatic drainage, meditation, and breathwork.
For your vocabulary //
‘Pissaladière’: A lattice-style flatbread, I believe, traditionally with anchovies and olives. I read about it in this chic cooking newsletter and was inspired.
To read //
“The Death of Partying In The U.S.A” My favorite quote: “I cannot deny that abstinence is good for young people’s livers; but I worry that it’s part of a larger set of behaviors that’s bad for their hearts.”
How to Know a Person by David Brooks: Currently reading this for the second time.
To listen to //
Scriptnotes: A Screenwriter’s Guide to Directors: I thought this would be niche to the film industry or just for screenwriters (which I am not), but it offers really great advice on how to work with people with big visions.
Okay, that’s all. I’m about to go house a margarita pizza.
Have a great weekend!
Love,
Megan
Hello, i love your outfits and figured you might be into this! Building a space where people post daily fits, archive what they wear, and explore other styles. Kind of like a visual diary meets a style network. We're early but already seeing some really cool taste emerge. Would be dope to have your POV in the mix.
