Cali called
A little birthday note!
My sister and her boyfriend moved out to San Francisco in October of last year, and since then, the Bay Area has really grown on me. It’s comfortable to be in jeans and a t-shirt most of the time. Everyone’s nice. It’s quaint but not sleepy. You can grow a lemon tree in your backyard, and I don’t think I’ll ever get over the views of the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s undeniably idyllic. For a long time, I felt like admitting that I could potentially see myself in another city was betraying the one I live in. But growing up — turned 31 last week! — means holding space for multiple truths: I love New York, and San Francisco is pretty magical.
I rang in 31 in SF. There were some bumps: I woke up hungover, it was an overcast Monday, and at breakfast I got blood on my brand-new yellow shorts. But it didn’t matter because I was with my mom and sister, and they packed surprise birthday candles to make my almond croissant feel special. The sun poked out, and we celebrated life at this little green bistro table lightly dusted in powdered sugar (from my dramatic candle blowing). I’ve been feeling extra lucky lately — or maybe it’s just grateful. Because even when things go wrong, they’re also going really right, you know? Multiple things can be true.
Now onto some things I’ve been into lately…
SAVED TABS
To wear //
Madewell The Low-Rise Loose Jeans - Okay, the photos of these jeans are not doing them justice, but they are so good! They’re a true low-rise, right at the hip. The wash is a perfect classic wash blue denim with a nice weight; most of my low-rise jeans are so light they almost feel like sweatpants — not these. I’d recommend taking your normal size because they run a touch big. I’m 5’2”, so I got them in ‘short,’ and the hem hovers just above the floor, so they’ve been working with both flats and a little heel!
To watch //
Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal on NYT cooking - You will not get a recipe out of it but it’s a joy watching these two try and explain their mom’s banana bread recipe while fully making up their own and then cutting into a prop bread at the end!
To read //
“My fancy concierge doctor answers every single question about health (and happiness)” - Fun read and this quote stood out to me: “Loneliness has the equivalent health effect of smoking 15 cigarettes a day.” Let that land.
Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall - Loved this book!! (Side note: farms are super dangerous!)
To listen to //
Callie’s LA marathon playlist! LOL but seriously if you’re on a run (or a brisk walk), this will get you hyped.
All for today! Thanks for reading!
Love,
Megan
